security and privacy

(facilitated by Donna)

What makes a server secure and safe? Does this also apply to user's pc's? What behaviour is essential for sysops but not for users, and the other way around? What do we need to know and be able to do to ensure that our data does not get tapped, sniffed, stolen, copied, mapped and mined? What are sysop/user rights and duties?

Examples of topics we could cover:

Encryption, SSH, SCP, SSL, Truecrypt

Tunnels, VPN

PKI, public/private keys, PGP

Certificates, certificate authorities, web of trust

Privoxy

Tor

Another interesting tool is the martus publishing server. It is an open source system offering secure and decentralized publishing. You can find it on www.martus.org
