Techmeet began in 2006 as a summit of international developers who had worked together for 8 years, primarily through the Indymedia network. The meeting was designed to get all these people together and see what happened :)
Well, what happened is that we found out we were really disappointed with the state of Indymedia. And that we were really overburdened by the work necessary to keep the IMC's running. And, that many people in imc-tech had left when the day-to-day work became too mundane -- too much work and not enough glory. And those of us who were left were stuck with a bad situation. If we abandoned our work, IMC would literally fall apart. If we kept going, we would continue to be burned out.
So, we developed a master plan to merge the Mir and sf-active codebases into one codebase. We also decided to chart out a network architecture that could not be affected by server seizures, hardware failures or donation withdrawals (like ahimsa).
Since then, we've met every year and we've continued along our path towards creating this new Indymedia. We are an open organization and we invite everyone to join.
